I was disturbed to see nowadays that the frogs from the Tasek Chini were no longer performing. They have almost disappeared. This may not seemed odd to you, in fact, you may not have any notion where Tasek Chini is.. In the end, it “was” a beautiful large size of freshwater lake in the tropical forests of Malaysia. It “was” because it now no longer is beautiful as it was, with pollution levels reportedly 56 times higher than is known as healthier, and worse, this is right in the tropical jungle.
The frogs are not the only real people disappearing. The fishes, cobras, pythons are also diminishing in numbers. Weeds named the “Cat’s Tail” have spread, snuffing out important daylight that could allow organisms to develop.
This really is worrying enough for some real action to be taken to bring back the environment. In retrospect, just how can action be used to protect the environment, or a delicate ecosystem such as Tasek Chini, or any lake on the planet?
At Tasek Chini I find out about the Sustainable Development Network or SUSDEN which can be working the Save Tasik Chini Campaign since August 2004, and these are remedial steps taken by the Non Government companies and the authorities in concert to action the decline:
1. Collect and eliminate weeds and fallen trees that choke the pond
2. reduce the pollution that originates from recently created training camps for National Service that have now been built near the river
3. Reduce steadily the industrial pollution from nearby oil palm estates that bring pesticides and fertilisers to the lake
4. stop illegal logging activities near the sea
5. disallow opening of land within the forest near the river
6. Presenting programs to enable the aborigines called Jakun living in the nearby areas of the seas so that they carry on to live there with their conventional methods that are linked to biodiversity conservation.
Most significant of is training to children on the importance of the lake and expose them to the lifestyle of the aborgines living off the land surrounding the lake. These aborigines lived in harmony with the plants, animals and atmosphere and they ensure the success of the sea.
Now if you do have a river locally where you are living, ensure that the frogs stll perform. Frogs certainly are a good barometer of the surroundings. Frogs are suffering as a result of contamination, habitat destruction, predation and genetic pollution. Will the frogs sing again at Tasek Cini? We don’t know yet, but there’s something we do know. Regardless of where we are, if we save the frogs, we could be in a position to save our lives too.
